Please Note: Discussion meetings strongly contribute to members' training. Such discussion tables allow members to hear about other facility managers' experience when implementing similar projects to those they are working on. It also allows members to share their experience with colleagues having the same concerns. Such meetings really allow members to explore various avenues through speakers' own individual experience. Our objective is clear and simple: becoming BETTER facility managers.
TRAINING
IFMA-Montreal's strategic plan emphasizes the promotion of the Certified Facility Manager (CFM) designation. This is why CFM preparatory courses are being offered to assist facility managers to prepare to take the CFM exam and to help them verify if they have the qualities required.
It is with this approach that our upcoming activities will be oriented towards the nine (9) competencies on which the exam is based. This way facility managers can obtain knowledge of the specific competencies.
The exam to obtain the CFM designation is available only in English. Some universities grant credits to candidates with this designation.
However, since it is recognized worldwide as being the reference within the facility management industry, IFMA provides many other training courses especially targeted or aimed at completing members' skills in order to help them become better facility managers. There is also Distance Teaching offered (in English only) through Home Study. Therefore, the one-day exams can be given in Montreal if there are a sufficient number of participants.
IFMA-Montreal is also proud of its fellowships for students completing their Masters Degree or Doctorate in Property Management.
BENCHMARKING DISCUSSIONS/SEMINARS
Because IFMA-Montreal is concerned with improving members' skills, it puts a lot of emphasis on discussion meetings/seminars organized in such a way as to favour and value each participant's expertise and point of view through discussion table meetings.
Guest speakers are invited to share their facility management experience in light of a specific angle or theme. Such meetings allow participants to explore various avenues in relation to each participant's individual background. The objective is always clear and simple: becoming BETTER facility managers.
Our members are truly interested in such discussion meetings which answer specific needs. The following themes are just a few of the subjects to be discussed at our next meetings:
- A Building's Efficiency Ratio
- Office Space per Employee and Office Space for Support Staff
- Universal Planning
- Alternative Layout: Telework, Hoteling, Shared Offices, Satellite Offices
- Maintenance Costs
- Indirect Costs
- Environmental Costs
- Safety Management
- Procurement Management
- Telecommunications Management
- Work Teams Management
NETWORKING
Faced with various problems, the facility manager is often in the hot seat. He or she must constantly find quick-fix solutions. It is for this reason, that a good network of connections comes handy when teamed up to a sound background and multiple skills.
Since its beginning, IFMA-Montreal has always given special attention to the power of networking by multiplying contact points and efforts in order for its members to know each other more and be able to exchange on their various professional experiences. Apart from discussion meetings, seminars and visits, the association also organizes monthly breakfast meetings and a few other social activities such as the Christmas Party and the Golf Tournament to which more than 400 people participate in each and every year.
Meetings between chapters and international gatherings are also crucial to build a sound network of specialized contacts in the facility management industry.
"Networking with IFMA is something that is very important for me, as much on the international, national or local level, because depending on the nature of the problem to be solved, I know I can always find the information I need." - Robert Brosseau, BLJC Property Management Services.
